MOVING SALE! A new store and more....

Hoping everyone is enjoying gorgeous spring weather in their corner of the world! Its been unusually warm here in Minnesota for this time of year.  It feels like we fast forwarded two months and everyone is soaking it in despite seasonal allergies.  I'm glad the weather is cooperating as I'm packing up all the vintage and photo equipment and moving in one week into a new studio/store in downtown Hopkins on Main Street.  I'm very excited as I've come a long way from my starting point two years ago.  Its been a lot of work setting up a retail space- oh the leases, insurance, street signage, display fixtures, advertising, etc. to sort out! But its all going to be SO worth it when Jojo's makes its debut here in the Twin Cities.  Please check out my JOJO'S FACEBOOK PAGE and follow me there as well!  I'll be posting pictures there as I plan to document my retail store opening journey.  I've joked that I need some serious local advertising efforts so people will check out my new little shop!

An idea that occurred to me:

Well.....maybe not. In the meantime, I've made some price reductions on my current offerings and am offering an additional
15% OFF your order this weekend!

Just use code MOVE15 at checkout and save yourself a little ka-ching!

Speaking of sexy legs, did any of you get a chance to watch my amazing television debut on the new TLC Discovery Channel show "My Crazy Obsession" with Doris MayDay?  LOL  It was fun to be sure.  I did not get to watch it before it aired, and I was a little freaked out when they showed the "Love Doll Collector" episode just before my segment, as just about all my family and close friends were watching. Fortunately no one publicly disowned me. The actual episode can be caught on rerun on TLC.  Its about a Las Vegas transplant living in Minneapolis who is trying to live a 1950s lifestyle to the extreme.  They have a little teaser available for the public on their website which shows me photographing Doris in a retro pinup session in my old studio.  You can watch it HERE.

Well, thats all for this week.  As always, I'm listing beautiful new items all the time and would love to see your bright and shining face in the store!

Jojo's is on TV? What???

I hope this finds you all well and enjoying your March! The snow is melting up here in Minnesota and big exciting changes are happening for Jojo's!  Much news to share with you today!

First off, I wanted to let you know that I will be on t.v. tomorrow night at 9pm CT on a new show on TLC Discovery called "My Crazy Obsession."  Yes, we all know this is dangerous agreeing to appear on a reality show since theres not much reality to it, but it was good fun.  I am actually not the main character, but a vintage seller and photographer (which is true) that comes to the rescue of a girl stuck in the 50s.  Here is the teaser: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/09/my-crazy-obsession-1950s_n_1335646.html  Hope you will tune in for the laughs!  I actually have not seen any more than this, so it will be a surprise for me as well!

Secondly, Jojo's is opening a vintage studio in April that is finally open to the public!  *gasp!*  It will be on 10th and Main Street in Hopkins, Minnesota and will be open for an occasional sale one long weekend each month and also will be open by appointment. This will be in addition to my online shop.  I'd love to have a FT shop, but family demands make that a challenge right now.  One step at a time!  Stay tuned for Grand Opening info and pictures of window displays and other fun stuff!

Lots of new spring and summer items will be coming to Jojo's both on the website and in store! Check out our listings daily for new finds for your wardrobe.

And finally, in celebration of my 10 minutes of fame, vintage savings can be found this week on the website with coupon codes at checkout:

TVTIME for FREE US SHIPPING
INTERNATIONAL customers will receive 20% off their purchase with coupon code UKLOVE!

If you'd like to receive these coupons by email, please sign up for my preferred customer email list by sending me a quick note to josette@jojosretroandvintage.com.

See you in the movies!

Longing for A Very Vintage Thanksgiving (oh but theres a SALE too....)

Thanksgiving when I was little was very small and homespun.  I grew up in Minnesota with no extended family nearby, so my small, struggling family of five celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas without all the usual hub-bub surrounding the holidays. There were no exhausting car trips all over the state visiting people that really didn't want to see you anyway. Dad was on his La-z-boy recliner watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and then the football game with my brother, not white-knuckling it on a country road in a developing snowstorm.

My mother's kitchen smelled of basting herbed turkey and her kitchen cabinets were decorated with carefully cutout images from magazines depicting vintage holiday scenes, happy families dining, and festive decorating ideas.  We always had the same meal each year: sage stuffing, corn and bean succotash, butterball turkey, white rolls and the jellied cranberry sauce.  The sauce was a mystery to me in how it had been extracted from the can so it lay in a perfectly rippled, molded state in the carousel glass dish.  Thrilled at being out of school on holiday but without much to do, I'd spend my time hovering around the table watching her preparations and marveling at all the different colors in that amber toned dish.  She would set the table with her white china dishes that were only used for special occasions.  They each had a single red rose etched into the center of each dish and were simple and elegant.  I came to find out as an adult that she obtained those dishes one at a time in a supermarket promo.  Ah, the days before credit cards, when it actually took time to obtain your prized possessions.  I rarely see those dishes anymore. Mom is in her 70s and prefers to use festive paper plates so the clean up is less tiring, but those old magazine cutouts are still taped on the wooden cupboard doors.  When the fine dishes have made a rare appearance along with the familiar cooking smells, I am filled with the awe of looking at a childhood memory through my now adult eyes.

Over the years my family of five has changed and grown and shrunk with the changes that come with altered relationships, long distance moves and the growing of children.  This year will mark the first year my mother has not had a thanksgiving dinner as she has accepted an invitation from a younger in-law who will host a gathering.  I and my young children will be shuffled off to my husband's enormous multi-generational family gathering in southern Minnesota.  I fear my little homespun thanksgiving has forever been altered by the now customary driving all over the state to attend extended relatives gatherings.  Yet, I am thankful for the memories my mother gave me and that fact that despite a strict budget, she created wonderful memories for me.  My challenge is to try to recreate holiday memories for my own children.  With the help of etsy and the internet, I've tracked down a lot of vintage Christmas decor that we had when I was little along with the wonderful bubble lights for the tree.  But Thanksgiving?  I'm sad to say my cupboard doors are bare.  Maybe its time to get some old magazines off etsy and a pair of scissors.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!
